As Roku expanded its footprint into TV and Streaming partners, current UI for the Roku Channel OS along with purchase funnels needed to be updated to stay more modern and align with current experiences. The goal for these updates was to create a more streamline approach to finding the content users wanted, whether through purchasing subscriptions, local live TV, or searching through Roku's library of content.
Role and Responsibilities
While working on a series of Roku OS related projects, my role was normally working with UX research team and the Development teams to understand critical user journeys and to create updated designs to better help finding content. Using existing design layouts and existing UI, I was tasked with creating "fresh" and "modern" experiences.
Electronic Programing Guide (EPG)
With this project I was in charge of updating the Roku EPG and to better understand how a user moves through our system using a Roku remote. Starting with our current user flow, I identified a "typical" user path and what interaction could take place.

Competitor Analysis
Working with research to understand who in the market would be a disruptor or direct competitor, we would look at each one's UI and input device in comparison to our own.
We would additional look at other digital EPG's across industry. With more competition moving into the streaming space, it was important to track trending systems and interactions. Pretty quickly we were able to identified what was considered a norm and what was a outlier.
Updating old layouts and UI
Once I had a good understanding of design elements, existing and set features, and alignment with stakeholders, I began to design updates to the existing Roku EPG layout. I would take this to multiple reviews both internal and eventually to stakeholders to get agreement and signoff on final designs.
Final Design
Once final design was approved I would be tasked with three design concepts ranging from "Mild to Wild", each pushing the design further to new bounds. The final three concepts would then we sent for user testing and surveying to see how they would preform overall. After testing a final review would be done with Engineering and Stakeholders to cement final timeline and scope of development. These two factors would then help towards final recommendation.
Megastore Update - Search/Adding subscription
On another part of Roku OS, I was tasked at updating the user flow and experience of a user looking for and subscribing to new content. One main business goal that needed to stay aligned to was to create dedicated evergreen funnels for partnered clients' content. As more entertainment groups enter the streaming world, we needed to update our systems to accommodate their selling needs on our platform.
Again starting with understanding the current user experience, I would create new flows detailing out the new experience to align to project goals. In the example adding in new purchasing flows or "way's to watch" for our partnered channels.
